Necessity is the mother of all RE-invention

March, 2008, Portland, OR - This winter, Leatherman Tool Group introduced Skeletool™. This new platform - the fusion of a pocket knife and pliers tool - is redefining the pocket-survival-tool category Leatherman itself invented, 25 years ago.

Today's outdoor enthusiasts want to keep weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality. While multi-tools have multiple options, they're often heavier with more features than are used on a regular basis. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but render themselves useless when necessary adjustments call for a tool. Enter the new, five-ounce Skeletool platform: Minimal weight, compact size and endless capabilities.

Whether you're hiking out in the backcountry, rock climbing, four-wheeling, snowboarding, fishing, or putting together a DIY project at home; there are just some things you can't do without. "We could all agree that a quality knife, strong pliers and a good screwdriver were the perfect mix," said Sr. Design Engineer John Nenadic. "The challenge was going back to the original design of the PST and revising the look of compact functionality for today's users."

Skeletool's outside-accessible blade means, just like a pocket knife, it can be opened quickly with one hand. Bit driver technology makes it possible to customize the screwdriver for any job. Take either one of the bits that comes with the tool, and can be stored in the handles, or integrate the Leatherman bit kit (sold separately) and there are upwards of 42 Hex, Robertson, Pozi, Torx, Phillips and Slotted bit options. Full-size pliers with wire cutters and folding handles - as only Leatherman can engineer them - are strong, comfortable and easy-to-use.

Two versions of the tool, Skeletool™ and Skeletool™ CX began shipping worldwide in January 2008. The Skeletool model is stainless steel with a 420HC blade and retails for $72.00. Skeletool CX is also stainless steel but features DLC Tungsten coating for scratch resistance and a 154CM combination straight/serrated blade. MSRP for the CX model is $96.00. Both versions are covered under the Leatherman 25-year warranty.
