Leatherman Tool Group Celebrates 25th Anniversary
July, 2008, Portland, OR - This July, will officially mark an occasion that changed how we recreate in the great outdoors, do home-improvement projects and work in the trades. In 1983, with five employees, a machine shop and after years of "going back to the drawing board", Tim Leatherman founded Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. The company that ultimately defined both the multi-tool market and its bar-to entry.
Today the company's headquarters/90,000-square-foot manufacturing plant and more than 500 employees still call Portland Oregon home. It's here, starting with the original Pocket Survival Tool (PST), that 40-plus products have been designed and manufactured resulting in more than $1.3 billion dollars in sales worldwide.
Born and raised in Oregon, Tim's choice in company locale is no coincidence. "It's important to me that Leatherman give back to the community by providing jobs and contributing to our local economy." In 2005 Tim retired from his role as president and Jake Nichol, former president of Danaher Tools, took over duties as CEO. Tim still lives in Portland and plays an active role in the direction of the company as Chairman of the Board.
To fully commemorate this celebration, the company will be producing two 25th Anniversary tools. The first, a commemorative version of the popular Wave (8.5 oz.) model, will feature the anniversary logo and Tim Leatherman's signature stamped into the handles as well as a special sheath. This limited-edition version will be produced and available through Leatherman retailers worldwide.
The second tool will be based on the current Charge TTi (10.5 oz.) and will feature sterling silver handle scales designed by seventh-generation, Argentinean silversmith, Adrian Pallarols. The handles will have the anniversary logo, Tim's signature and Adrian's family stamp of authenticity. These limited-edition, numbered tools - only 999 produced - will come with an elegant display box and be sold at select retailers and on www.leatherman.com. Both tools will carry the 25-year warranty.
In addition to the commemorative tools, Leatherman will be hosting a 25th Anniversary Sale and BBQ for the public on July 11 at their retail store/company headquarters. The first 25 people to visit the store will receive a free Leatherman Micra signed by Tim Leatherman. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to benefit Leatherman's two local charities, Big Brother/Big Sister and Habitat for Humanity. The event will be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a special presentation from Tim Leatherman at 1:00.
