The Leatherman Surge is one of our two largest multi-tools; a real powerhouse, built with our largest pliers, longest multi-tool blades and easy-to-use locks. A unique blade exchanger, large and small bit drivers and four outside-opening blades give you quick access to the tools you use most. The Surge was built for tough jobs and the hands that do them. Comes with a nylon sheath.

Original Surge® Tools

  1. Needlenose Pliers

A cast pinching tool with an angled nose for holding or manipulating materials, ideal for small objects or tight spaces.

  2. Regular Pliers

A cast pinching tool for holding or manipulating materials.

  3. Wire Cutters

420 HC stainless steel bypass cutting blades, meant for cutting regular-gauge wire.

  4. Hard-wire Cutters

Bypassing cutting blades ideal for cutting hard wire.

  5. Stranded-wire Cutters

Concave cutters located under plier jaws for use on Stranded wire - smaller gauge wire bundled or wrapped together to form a larger conductor. The concave shape helps to keep the shape of the strands without crushing them.

  6. Electrical Crimper

Found in the jaw of the tool and used for general purpose crimping of electrical connectors.

  7. Wire Stripper

A useful notch for safely stripping multiple types of wire.

  8. 420HC Knife

A knife crafted from 420HC, a high-carbon stainless steel that is corrosion resistant and can be easily maintained.

  9. 420HC Serrated Knife

A toothed blade crafted from 420HC stainless steel. Serrations grab and cut materials easily, making this style of blade exceptionally useful for cutting through rope or fiber.

  10. Saw

A toothed tool made from 420HC stainless steel that is designed to work on a pull motion, which requires less effort and has less propensity for breakage. The open-tooth design keeps the saw from filling up with material, allowing the user to complete a job without pausing to clean the tool.

  11. Spring-action Scissors

Scissors for cutting paper or other light materials that automatically spring back to the open position when not being used. Sprung tools are helpful for reducing hand-fatigue, especially in scissors where the user may be opening and closing the tool many times to make multiple cuts in a row.

  12. Awl w/ Thread Loop

An awl is a tool that can be used to create or enlarge holes by puncturing materials such as leather or canvas. They can also be used to start stair steps for hunting stands. The thread loop can be used for sewing materials together when necessary.

  13. Ruler (9 in | 22 cm)

A precise measuring guide for determining length in inches or centimeters, up to 9 inches or 22 centimeters.

  14. Can Opener

A lever/punch style tool to assist in opening canned goods, perfect for camping or in survival situations. The blade on this tool has been ground in a way that it pushes the cut metal into the rim, keeping sharp edges from cutting the user as the can is handled.

  15. Bottle Opener

A tool that allows the user to pop the top on a favorite beverage.

  16. Wood/Metal File

A 420HC stainless steel tool with a crisscross pattern that forms a rough surface for the user to file or smooth both wood and metal surfaces. The file pattern on Leatherman files is extended to the end of the file as well as down the side to give a file stoke and/or a more precise file edge.

  17. Diamond-coated File

A stainless steel blank coated with premium synthetic diamond particles which create a rough surface that can be used to sharpen hard steel blades with much more precision than wood/metal files.

  18. Blade Exchanger®

This feature allows the user to swap out Leatherman and universal t-shank tools of the same length for specific jobs, extending the functionality of the multi-tool. The Blade Exchanger® locks the tool into place for safety during use.

  19. Large Bit Driver

This driver slot holds any of the full-size Leatherman tool bits in place and allows the user to exchange bits for different jobs. Not intended for the eyeglass screwdriver tip.

  20. Small Bit Driver

This small driver slot holds the Leatherman mini tool bit in place and allows the user to use either end of the bit for different jobs. It is not intended for use with full-size screwdriver bits.

  21. Large Screwdriver

A flat bladed screwdriver tooled from 420HC stainless steel, intended for use on larger slotted screws.

Original Surge® Features

  1. All Locking Features

All locking features means that every tool and knife on the body of the handle, with the exception of the plier head, will lock into place. Note that the Crunch; however, does feature both all locking tools and plier head. The all locking design enables the user to operate individual tools safely and effectively. By locking them into place when fully open, the user can put pressure on the implement while safely completing the job, before manually unlocking the tool to stow it away.

  2. Lanyard Ring

This secure ring is for attaching the tool safely and securely to a lanyard. Often people who work near water or on scaffolding attach their tool to a lanyard on their person to avoid losing the tool if it's dropped.

  3. One-hand Operable Features

Every feature on this tool can be opened and operated with one hand. This enables the user to keep the other hand free for situations that require multi-tasking or a free hand.

        Comments about Original Surge:

I use a letterman 300 everyday and had to leave it in another state to be shipped home do to flight regulations. I purchased the surge for a tool while i waited. The things I like better about it are the knives being exterior, and the replaceable bits. This size tool is ideal because the pliers will do real work. the only negative is the file being loose. I know its in a little sleeve but it frequently gets pulled out when the tool is pulled from its holster so I will lose it someday I'm sure. One quick story, dragging my 35' boat on a three axle trailer one day I lost a wheel bearing. With only my leatherman 300, a rock and tire iron I was able to replace my wheel bearing and seal and continue on my way. I won't leave home without it.

        Comments about Original Surge:

I bought a couple of these for keeping in a survival bag. The tools were a little stiff to deploy upon arrival, nothing a little WD40 couldn't fix. It gives me confidence to have this great multitool in our bags.

          Comments about Original Surge:

I lost my wave i had and used for many years. I thoroughly intended to purchase a wave until I studied the surge as a comparable replacement. The surge is a vast improvement over the wave. I feel the surge is a safer tool as every tool, blade ect. has a positive lock. It is larger and heavier than the wave but that is not a problem.

              Comments about Original Surge:

Okay… I like this thing. I might even like it a lot. However, it was on sale under the heading of "original surge." I thought they were using the word "original" to show that this was an exceptional product. What it actually meant is the "new surge"has replaceable wirecutters and the "original surge" does not. In addition, the scissors seem sharp but simply do not function well. There is a spring mechanism that is supposed to make the blades open back up after you cut. However, the spring mechanism on this device just moved out of the way and the scissors stayed in the closed position. This is clearly an engineering or construction issue. There did not appear to be any defects with this item. It probably sounds silly but I really like that these tools have well-functioning scissors. If the scissors don't work, I don't need it.

              Comments about Original Surge:

I carry this tool around the house on a regular basis. Fills many needs while doing chores. Only issue is that in my state carrry blades are limited to 3" - and the blade on this multi-tool is over 3" so it is technically illegal to carry it on the street.

              Comments about Original Surge:

First of all it has sentimental value because it was given to me by my deceased older brother, he bought it for me for my birthday and after parting with it he went out and bought one for himself, Both of us were in the building trade, Me a roofer and him a finish carpender. So we both got years of use out of this tool, After he past I gave his to my son and to this day I continue to use mine throughout my career and into my retirement I still use it almost every day!
