Frequently Asked Questions

What are the materials of the Serac and Monarch windows (lens)?

The Serac S2 and S3 windows are made from chemically-strengthened glass for exceptional durability and hardness. The Monarch 300, 400 and 500 windows are made from a strong, yet lightweight polycarbonate material. The Serac S1 and the Monarch 200 do not have windows.

What is the coating on the Serac windows and where is it?

It is double-face, anti-reflection coating on both the inside and outside of the glass.

Why do some of the reflectors have a textured coating and what is this called?

This is called Orange Peel texture and it's a stippling process. The textured surface gives the light distribution more points making for a much smoother, article-free light pattern.

What is the benefit of the coating?

Coating reduces light loss and intensifies light transmission.

What are the Serac and Monarch reflectors and the reflector-plating made from?

The Serac S2 and S3 reflectors are made from machined aluminum. They are then aluminum-plated and textured. The Serac S1 is smooth machined aluminum. Monarch 300, 400 and 500 are all aluminum-plated polycarbonate and the 400 and 500 are textured as well. The Monarch 200 is smooth machined aluminum.

What types of anodizing processes are used?

Type III, the strongest hard-anodizing process for maximum durability, is used on the Serac lights. Type II, used on the Monarch is for adding colors to materials. This is what we use for our Squirt® and Juice® tools as well.

What are the Serac and Monarch bezels made of?

On the Serac lights we use 300-grade (303) stainless steel on the S2 and S3 and type-III, hard-anodized aluminum on the S1. The Monarch bezels are made from the same 6061-T6 anodized aluminum as the bodies.

What are the pocket clips made of?

The pocket clips are all made from 420 stainless steel for excellent durability and impact resistance.

What is the water-resistant/proof rating on the lights?

The Serac S1, S2, and S3 are rated IPX8. They and are sealed against continuous submersion in water to a depth of up to 3.28 ft. The Monarch lights are rated to IPX4 meaning they are water-resistant.

What material are the O-rings made from?

The Serac lights have O-rings made from 70-durometer NBR, a nitrile rubber that resists most oils, fuels, and gases. The 70-durometer is the flexibility factor, meaning the O-rings are less flexible (squishy) than the switch cover (see next question). Monarch lights have silicon O-rings, a rubber that also resists most oils, fuels, and gases.

What is the type of LED are used in the Serac lights?

The S1 uses Nichia 5mm GS-K1 LED. The S2 and S3 use Cree 7090XR-E LED.

What is the type of LED are used in the Monarch lights?

The 200 uses a 5mm LED. The 300 uses a Soal .5W. The 400 and 500 use a Cree Q2.

Why do some of the reflectors have a textured coating and what is this called?

This is called Orange Peel texture and it's a stippling process. The textured surface gives the light distribution more points making for a much smoother, article-free light pattern.

What material are the bodies of the flashlights made from?

The Serac lights are made from 6061-T6, hard-anodized aluminum. This is the same material that we use in the Genus® pruner and the Charge® AL/ALX scales. It is as strong as stainless steel but much lighter. The Monarch lights are made 6061-T6 anodized aluminum.

Why do we anodize the aluminum and how thick is the hard-anodized finish?

Any kind of anodizing increases corrosion and wear resistance. Anodic films are generally much stronger and more adherent than most types of paint and metal plating, making them less likely to crack and peel. The hard-anodized finish on the Serac lights is more than 40 microns thick.

What material are the switch covers made from?

All our lights use a 60-durometer silicone rubber that resists most oils, fuels, and gases. The 60 durometer means that it's more malleable than the O-rings and better for easy on/off of the switch.

What materials are used for the electrical contacts on the switch springs?

The switch spring contacts on the Serac lights are gold-plated. The contacts on the Monarch lights are made from copper.

What materials are used for the electrical contacts on the Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) and why?

The PCB contacts on the Serac lights are gold-plated. Gold plating allows for excellent conductivity due to its stable physical and chemical performance. On Monarch the PCB contacts are silver.
