This Year’s Best Halloween Hacks

With Halloween just days away, it’s time to get serious. Pumpkins need carving, yards need decorating, and costumes need to be made ASAP.

Luckily, we’ve got your back. Check out some great ways to make Halloween extra spooky this year with items you probably already have lying around.

Jack-O’-Lantern Oranges

Whether you’re hoping to encourage your kids to get more vitamin C or you need a pick-me-up come lunchtime at the office, these will do the trick. All you need is an orange and a permanent marker. Really.

Simply draw your best version of a pumpkin face on a mandarin, orange, or clementine. That’s it. They look surprisingly similar to miniature gourds and they’re a healthy snack to boot.

Spider Ice Cubes

This one might require a trip to the store, unless you happen to keep plastic spiders lying around. We promise it’s worth it.

To add a degree of scary je-ne-sais-quoi to your Halloween cocktails, drop a plastic spider in each section of an ice cube tray before filling and freezing. Once they’re ready, add them to your favourite libation and propose a toast to the season. If you’re feeling sinister, wait until your guests discover the surprise on their own.

Mummy Anything

Anything can become a mummy with some white electrical or medical tape, a multi-tool, and creativity. Your water bottle? A mummy. Your kid’s juice box? Mummy. A plant pot? You guessed it! The only limit is your imagination.

It’s as easy as it sounds. Just wrap whichever object you want to mummify in white tape, snip it with your multi-tool’s knife or scissors to make it precise, add some eyes (googly eyes are great but a marker works in a pinch) and you’re good to go.

Multi-Purpose Carving Knife

Despite what some stores try to tell you, a special knife designed for the sole purpose of carving a pumpkin is not necessary. All you really need is a pocket knife and a bit of creativity.

In addition to being compact, versatile, and great for heavy-duty work, the aptly named Skeletool can carve a mean pumpkin. Its combo knife blade means you can get precise with your design, effortlessly making your front porch the best on the block. The best part? The knife will be a dependable must-have long after the 31st has come and gone.

Last-Minute Robot Costume

Depending on how stocked your garage or basement is, you might already have everything you need to create a next-level robot costume. Scour your house for boxes, duct tape, aluminum venting (this could require a quick trip to the hardware store), and silver spray paint and get to work.

You’re going to want to have your multi-tool on hand for this project, it’ll make the job infinitely easier. Take the largest box and cut holes for your head and arms using your knife or saw. Trim the venting and attach it to the arm holes. Spray paint the whole thing, let it dry, and then add futuristic decorations as you see fit. Steel wool, bottle caps, and bits of wire are all perfect.
