The Leatherman Surge is one of our two largest multi-tools; a real powerhouse, built with our largest pliers, longest multi-tool blades and easy-to-use locks. A unique blade exchanger, replaceable 154CM wire cutters and four outside-opening blades give you quick access to the tools you use most. The Surge was built for tough jobs and the hands that do them.

Surge® Tools

  1. Needlenose Pliers

A cast pinching tool with an angled nose for holding or manipulating materials, ideal for small objects or tight spaces.

  2. Regular Pliers

A cast pinching tool for holding or manipulating materials.

  3. 154CM Replaceable Wire Cutters

Replaceable bypassing cutting blades crafted from 154CM, meant for cutting regular and light-gauge wire. 154CM will keep its edge three times as long as traditional stainless steel for less down-time in the field.

  4. 154CM Replaceable Hard-wire Cutters

Replaceable bypassing cutting blades crafted from 154CM, meant for cutting hard wire. 154CM will keep its edge three times as long as traditional stainless steel for less down-time in the field.

  5. Stranded-wire Cutters

Concave cutters located under plier jaws for use on Stranded wire - smaller gauge wire bundled or wrapped together to form a larger conductor. The concave shape helps to keep the shape of the strands without crushing them.

  6. Electrical Crimper

Found in the jaw of the tool and used for general purpose crimping of electrical connectors.

  7. Wire Stripper

A useful notch for safely stripping multiple types of wire.

  8. 420HC Knife

A knife crafted from 420HC, a high-carbon stainless steel that is corrosion resistant and can be easily maintained.

  9. 420HC Serrated Knife

A toothed blade crafted from 420HC stainless steel. Serrations grab and cut materials easily, making this style of blade exceptionally useful for cutting through rope or fiber.

  10. Saw

A toothed tool made from 420HC stainless steel that is designed to work on a pull motion, which requires less effort and has less propensity for breakage. The open-tooth design keeps the saw from filling up with material, allowing the user to complete a job without pausing to clean the tool.

  11. Spring-action Scissors

Scissors for cutting paper or other light materials that automatically spring back to the open position when not being used. Sprung tools are helpful for reducing hand-fatigue, especially in scissors where the user may be opening and closing the tool many times to make multiple cuts in a row.

  12. Awl w/ Thread Loop

An awl is a tool that can be used to create or enlarge holes by puncturing materials such as leather or canvas. They can also be used to start stair steps for hunting stands. The thread loop can be used for sewing materials together when necessary.

  13. Ruler (8 in | 19 cm)

A precise measuring guide for determining length in inches or centimeters, up to 8 inches or 19 centimeters.

  14. Can Opener

A lever/punch style tool to assist in opening canned goods, perfect for camping or in survival situations. The blade on this tool has been ground in a way that it pushes the cut metal into the rim, keeping sharp edges from cutting the user as the can is handled.

  15. Bottle Opener

A tool that allows the user to pop the top on a favorite beverage.

  16. Wood/Metal File

A 420HC stainless steel tool with a crisscross pattern that forms a rough surface for the user to file or smooth both wood and metal surfaces. The file pattern on Leatherman files is extended to the end of the file as well as down the side to give a file stoke and/or a more precise file edge.

  17. Diamond-coated File

A stainless steel blank coated with premium synthetic diamond particles which create a rough surface that can be used to sharpen hard steel blades with much more precision than wood/metal files.

  18. Blade Exchanger®

This feature allows the user to swap out Leatherman and universal t-shank tools of the same length for specific jobs, extending the functionality of the multi-tool. The Blade Exchanger® locks the tool into place for safety during use.

  19. Large Bit Driver

This driver slot holds any of the full-size Leatherman tool bits in place and allows the user to exchange bits for different jobs. Not intended for the eyeglass screwdriver tip.

  20. Large Screwdriver

A flat bladed screwdriver tooled from 420HC stainless steel, intended for use on larger slotted screws.

  21. Small Screwdriver

A flat bladed screwdriver tooled from 420HC stainless steel, intended for use on small slotted screws.

Surge® Features

  1. All Locking Features

All locking features means that every tool and knife on the body of the handle, with the exception of the plier head, will lock into place. Note that the Crunch; however, does feature both all locking tools and plier head. The all locking design enables the user to operate individual tools safely and effectively. By locking them into place when fully open, the user can put pressure on the implement while safely completing the job, before manually unlocking the tool to stow it away.

  2. Lanyard Ring

This secure ring is for attaching the tool safely and securely to a lanyard. Often people who work near water or on scaffolding attach their tool to a lanyard on their person to avoid losing the tool if it's dropped.

  3. Outside-accessible Features

This multi-tool features tools that are accessible while the tool is in its folded or closed position, mimicking the functionality of a pocket knife.

  4. One-hand Operable Features

Every feature on this tool can be opened and operated with one hand. This enables the user to keep the other hand free for situations that require multi-tasking or a free hand.

    Comments about Surge:

I got my first Leatherman tool in my early teens, and I still have it. Since then, I've purchased a Super Tool, a Super Tool 200, a Super Tool 300, a Surge, and a Micra for myself, a Micra for my wife and as gifts for 8 of my co-workers, and I just ordered a Rebar for my older son's first Leatherman tool. My younger son will get one when he's old enough! As a dad, I work on everything from toys to school projects and even trim nails and hair the stylist missed. As a husband, I open, clean, build, and repair things for my wife to keep our home in top shape. I maintain a vintage Mustang, my diesel truck, tractors, mowers, and trimmers, my wife's modern SUV and my boys' bikes and ATVs. As a Deputy Sheriff, I use my tool on a daily basis at work to keep our vehicles and expensive equipment going, clean guns and get stranded motorists going again. I also do a lot of home construction and renovation. And I use my Leatherman Surge and Micra to get it all done. If I'm dressed, my Leatherman tools are on my side.

        Comments about Surge:

I love this tool, have had the old version and the new version so let me start by saying that in the new version they fixed EVERY little thing that bugged me on the old one. The tool doesnt stick when it closes, the scissors no longer has a rubber grip, the pliers are big and beefy(as they should be), they sanded the edges of the tool for a more comfortable grip, and the buttons for the tools are easier to press in especially with gloves on. It is perfected in all areas except they got rid of small bit driver. if the tool had the small bit driver it would be perfect, literally perfect. SO i WISH leatherman would SELL the small bit driver so i can do modifications myself and so can anyone else who wants to. Otherwise im gonna have to buy the wave as it is the cheapest tool with the small bit driver.

        Comments about Surge:

I am a contractor, biker, hunter and have used Leatherman and other brands for 30 years. The SURGE is by far the best model I have owned. The interchangeable jigsaw blade design is absolutely brilliant! The only con is the spring retainer design for the screwdriver bits (I have the first generation design so they may have made improvements) but all I have to do is call (and I get a real AMERICAN) and they send me replacement parts free. NOTE: NEVER use WD40 on these tools, like some (politically correct word for not so smart) did in his bad review, it is a DEGREASER (dissolves lubricants) and will loosen screws on its body too. Use synthetic oil for best results.

The Surge is a very good tool. One of the features that really caught my eye is the blade exchanger. It gives you the ability to use any t-shank jigsaw blade with the Surge. The tool is also tough and has a wide variety of useful tools. The saw that comes with the surge is very good aswell. I would highly recommend it. It is worth the price.

Have owned and used the Surge since Dec of 2014. It is an outstanding Multi-Tool with exceptional versatility. The Surge is a quality build that easily addresses any basic tool requirement. Some may find this multi-tool a bit beefy and large. However, I find the heft a definite advantage when performing heavy duty task. Would highly recommend it to anyone needing quality tools at their immediate disposal.

          Comments about Surge:

I just got my new Surge and I'm alrady using it much more than anticipated! I work as a game technician at an arcade, and this tool really provides me with just about everything I need to repair what breaks down. From small electronics, to removing large hardware, this tool does it all for me. I would defenantly recommend purchasing the bit extender and bit set to go with it. As some side notes, To make everything (both bit sets and the spare file) fit in the sheath it came with I soaked it in hot water for about 15 min and stretched it out, which worked perfectly. Also I do find the flat head screwdrives sort of redundant since you have the exchangable bit feature. So It would be cool to see some different tools on it. Overall great tool for on the job work.

I have an old Surge among other leathermans', and I love the "big boss"! It's biggest flaws are the acute corners on the handle and the lose inside tools. Nothing much. And I loved the idea of heaving replaceble wire cutters, but not enough to give up the small bit driver!!! Thers simply no need of another screwdriver, when you already have a big one and the large bit driver. If the small one can't fit in there now, you shou think in something more usefull!!!

This tool is pretty well made and you can tell it is a quality product. However it seems to me that this is just a heavier version of the wingman with an interchangable saw blade and file. It is quite heavy for its size and the plyer/wire cutter is not spring loaded which could be challenging when griping something. I would not recommend it for someone who needs basic stuff. it is definately for pros

Purchased few Leatherman Fuses - one got broken - replaced by warranty. Then purchased the Supertool 300 - What a mistake! Send to replace by warranty - they replaced here in Australia with new version of Surge whether the actual tool which cae in as a replacement is new - not so sure..Lots of issues, irritating. Sent them few photos, communication was great thats all I can say. Quality - looks like it is not made in US anymore? It still usable but with bended out of box out of stright line scissors, loose cated iron part on the bottom of the tool, substantial vertical play of the blade and play in the saw/file attachement it is annoying not to say more. Leather pouch is really poorly designed and not practical. Utter disappointment while yes it still can be used. Average quality. Do not pay too much for it.

Seems to be a strong and versitle tool. A little stiff so far, but good otherwise. I'm disappointed in the Phillips screwdriver as it fell out somewhere and slid out the hole in the bottom of the sheath. I don't know if it wasn't fastened in correctly or not, but I would like to replace it.

              Comments about Surge:

I thought this was Leatherman's answer to my prayers for a good, strong, full size multitool that could be very versatile. I had owned a wave before(still do actually) but didn't use the eyeglass screwdriver that much and because I work with electric in my job I was really starting to take a toll on the wire cutters. Also to be honest I love the wave but it just didn't have the size I needed to put enough leverage on whatever I was trying to grip. Enter the surge. On your website its in the trades category. And I got so excited. I bought one as soon as I could and began using at work. I had set it down on a 4 ft ladder and bumped it. It fell to the ground and I heard something small break off and roll across the floor. It was the exterior lock for the inner tools on the bit driver/can-opener. Side this tool is only two months old. Disappointing that all it had to do was fall one wrong way and now its out of commission. I am pretty confident that leatherman will honor their warranty but this could possibly happen again down the road when its no longer under warranty. The wave will be taking over again until I get the surge back which is also disappointing if I think about it because I got the surge so I wouldn't wear my wave out so fast. Leather man is a great company and makes their stuff in the USA which I love but if they advertise that a tool would work well for a tradesman in normal everyday use then it breaks after it falls 4 feet that tell me that leather man needs to beef up this design a bit. I know its a heavy tool already but I know for a fact that if the surge weighed 3 or 4 ounces more than it already does but was more robust and wouldn't have this issue I would still buy it even after a reasonable price increase to boot. (pay close attention to that reasonable word I used) don't know if I can edit a review but if I can I will when i get it back from warranty.

I use the Surge along with additional accessories offered by Leatherman, the Bit Driver Extender and the Bit Kit for quick repairs to my Police Mountain Bike. The Bit Kit has numerous sized allen keys that can be quickly attached to the Surge for tightening loose bolts or to make quick adjustments to the bike during vigorous patrols. Its also small enough to be carried on your duty rig with an included pouch or you can carry it in your bike trunk. Leatherman also engraved my name and badge number on the tool for quick personalized identification.

This is perfect for me. I'm a bigger man with large hands and this fits / feels perfect in my hands. Only thing I didn't like was they removed the micro / eyeglass screwdriver tool and replaced it with a small straight blade screwdriver. Other than that I am very happy with my updated Surge.

One other thing would be nice, make a sheath that would fit not only the tool but the additional bit sets as well, even if it is an accessory or an upgrade price. Doesn't make sense having the bit sets and not being able to keep them with the tool.

                    Comments about Surge:

I have worn this tool on my belt for work, fishing/hiking and motorbike roadtrips for well over two years, and I absolutely love it. I work as a telecommunications technichian, and I get to use it every single day. The quality of this tool is great. I wore out the leather sheath, but it was to be expected after about 2.5 years of every day use. Replacing it didn't cost much either. I wouldn't go a day without my Leatherman Surge, if it's not on my belt, I bring it in my car or on my bike everywhere I go.

I use this tool every day, from just having to tighten a loose screw here at home to cutting a child out of a jammed seat belt of a car that had flipped over on the highway. I was the first person with a cutting tool on scene and was able to cut the strap and remove the child. This is the 2nd Surge I own, the first one I had for many years but I lost it at work. I felt incomplete for months like I was missing a limb, until my wife got me a new Surge for Christmas. She even had it engraved with my name. Now I feel complete. This is the best tool ever!!

                      Comments about Surge:

I have ordered a black version with what they call it a Black Oxide coating. This coating leaves itself on my hands, so without even starting to do anything, my hands become dirty the same second I pick up the tool.

I do not mind to have my hands dirty when I work, but this tool (Surge 21) was intended for home use only (meaning working in clean environment), so that I would not have to go to my garage for the tools all the time. Leatherman's idea is that this coating will eventually wear off leaving itself on my hands - I do not understand how someone came up with such nonsense and is completely disappointed with my purchase. Unfortunately since I engraved my tool (thought it will serve me for life.. eh..), I can not exchange it.

I do not recommend anyone to buy a Black Oxide version, just get a standard stainless steel one - it does not make your hands filthy the second it is picked up, so I am sure the stainless steel version will be a great purchase.

                            Comments about Surge:

I got this as a Christmas gift in December 2014. Two days later I was just admiring it, and playing around with the tools on it, and three of the accessories-the two flat tip screwdrivers and the leather awl- just suddenly started flopping loosely around. They are on the same side when the tool is opened.

The torx screws are anti-tamper, so I went to the hardware store and had to buy a kit to tighten it. Turns out, apparently, I need two; one for each side, so I haven't fixed it yet.

I will call customer service and see what they say.

The fit and finish is great, and the tool, overall, is very rugged. I primarily use the pliers, cutters, knife, and screwdriver attachments, and I like the fact that the cutter blades are replaceable.

I mainly bought the Surge to use in outdoor activities. I ride my horses frequently in the nearby National Forest and have two hazards to contend with, barbed wire and cactus thorns. Equipment failures can also be a problem in the back country. The Surge has the right tools to deal with all the issues I encounter. I find it to be an essential tool for a safe ride.

This was ordered as a Christmas gift and I wasn't supposed to know about it. When I got the email I asked my wife if she knew anything about it before I called my credit card to report a false charge. She had to fess up and tell me about my gift. I'm sure I'll get as much use out of it as the Wave I've had since 2003!

Its quite heavy, so won't be best on Every day Carry, but you won't find anything like that on the market. Tool is hard and tough as hell. Versatile and evolutive. Using it, I was able to bring back in woods, my crashed car, back on the road! Leatherman should leave place for bits empty and try to add somehow a long, fixed philips to Surge. New replacable wire cutters are step in right direction. Would be nice to find knive made with sth more than 420HC. No need of 154CM, but sth more than it's now.

                                  Comments about Surge:

First lets start with some design aspects I like:

                                  1. Exterior accessible scissors are a big bonus, and the scissors themselves are top of the line when it comes to multi-tools.
                                  2. The blades are the perfect combination of functionality and size. Much more intimidating than the wave's.
                                  3. The saw is very functional, and being able to switch out the file is pretty handy for sharpening tools on the fly. Keep in mind companies sell products similar to the saw and file that can also be used in the blade exchanger! Youtube it.
                                  4. Pliers are beautiful, best on a leatherman. Replacable wirecutters are also amazing.
                                  5. I enjoy the awl, not found on many leathermans.
                                  6. The weight and overall size may be big for some, but after carrying a wave for months it doesn't feel like much a difference. Sometimes i dont even clip it, just leave it deep in my pocket. Sensory adaptation is all it is.

                                  Not so good designs:

                                  1. This is a big one, the interior tools don't deploy correctly. Say you want the large flat head screwdriver, as you pull it out all the other tools pull out. Doesn't matter how far out you get they continue to follow, so you have to hold them back. Same thing on the other handles tools.
                                  2. As with all leathermans, they rust if you don't take care of them. Don't get this if you live in a humid area. If you do get it, make sure to WD-40 it regularly and take care of it when it gets wet.

                                  Experience:

The first day I got this i left it in my car at University. I had to finish a rocket project before class so me and a friend just took it to my car and finished it using the multitool. Also used it to make a protein shake. Cut off the head of a water bottle and used the knife to mix the powder. And of course the everyday uses i cant even remember. Fixing a closet, fixing a huge stapler, taking out branches of a tree on my lawn, and fixing my chem goggles. If you dont mind a little extra size, right pocket is reserved for this tool, then you will love it.
