Sometimes all you need is a really great pocket knife. Pocket knives have a long history, even Vikings and Romans carried simple folding knives. From opening packages at the office or home to carving a s’mores skewer at the campsite, you’ll find a million uses for a sharp, reliable knife.
Whether you plan on just a knife for your everyday carry alone or as a companion to your trusty multi-tool, we’ve got you covered.
How To Choose a Pocket Knife
All Leatherman pocket knives open with one hand and feature reliable locking mechanisms, so you can use them safely and with confidence.
Leatherman offers a variety of knives to choose from. Let’s look at some of the key features.
Combo vs. Straight Blade
Several of our pocket knives are offered in both combo and straight blade versions. Which one is right for you?
Straight blades are one continuous edge and are the most common types of knives. These knife blades excel at push cuts and fine work. Perhaps the best thing about a straight knife edge is that it is easy to sharpen and maintain yourself, whereas a combo blade’s serrations can be a little trickier to sharpen.
Combo blades have a serrated portion near the hand and the rest is a straight blade. Think of serrations as a bunch of little edges right in a row. Commonly seen on bread knives, these mini edges can saw through tough material much easier than a straight blade, but the cuts are not as clean and controlled. In general, a combo blade is a good choice if it will be your only cutting tool, and you need to be ready to cut through tough material like rope, belts and straps.
Size & Weight
When it comes to choosing an everyday carry blade, bigger isn’t always better. Leatherman pocket knives are available in a variety of sizes and weights but even the largest knives, the FREE K4 and FREE K4X, are a very manageable 5.5 oz and feature an easy-to-work-with 3.3 inch blade.
Extra Utility Built In
At Leatherman, our passion is multipurpose tools. So, of course, all of our knives do more than just cut. From the bottle opener on a Skeletool KBX to the full set of tools on the FREE T4, our pocket knives have a lot to offer.
For those torn between a pocket knife or a full-sized multi-tool, the Skeletool CX might be the perfect middle ground. The CX features one of our best blades and includes pliers and bit driver at only 5 oz., making it practical and portable.
