The Signal was designed specifically for outdoor adventures. Released in 2015, the Signal is durable, compact, and versatile, making it a global favorite. With a variety of colors available (and more always being added), you can match your style or choose a color that stands out in your pack, tacklebox, or campsite.
Maybe you've already seen the Signal multi-tool, or you own one but haven’t explored all of its features. In this deep dive, we’ll walk through each tool in detail so you can maximize the usefulness of your Signal on your next camping trip or outdoor adventure.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Signal, and since its launch, this multi-tool has remained relatively unchanged—a testament to the incredible work of our Product Designers and Engineers.
The Signal is the first compact multi-tool with a built-in ferro rod, hammer, and emergency whistle. When closed, it measures 4.5 inches and weighs 7.5 ounces—making it highly portable while still packing 19 essential tools. Featuring a DLC coating and Cerakote finishes (depending on the model), it is built to withstand wear, tear, and wet environments.
Let’s start with the exterior features of the Signal.
Located at one end, the hammer is ideal for securing anchor points for tarps and rain flies or loosening stubborn gear. A lock mechanism ensures the tool stays securely closed while in use.
Next to the hammer, you’ll find a bottle opener and a carabiner. This makes it easy to store your Signal on a bag or hang it in your tent—just remember to engage the lock for security.
The Signal includes built-in 3/16” and 1/4” box wrenches, along with a standard 1/4” bit driver. These features allow you to apply additional torque and access awkward spaces with ease.
A plain edge for slicing and food prep and a serrated portion for cutting rope and other tough materials.
A useful saw is included for clearing brush or gathering kindling.
A diamond-coated sharpener is built into the Signal to help maintain your knife and cutting tools while in the outdoors. Its design also allows for sharpening serrated edges. Store it in the spine of the tool and lock it into place for easy access.
Opening the Signal reveals a variety of versatile tools.
Needlenose pliers are excellent for fine work such as crimping barbs or pulling out pin bones from a fish filet.
Regular pliers are perfect for adjusting or tightening gear and handling hot items from the fire.
The Signal includes regular and hard wire cutters made from premium steel. Use the regular cutters for soft materials like zip ties and softer wire, while the hard wire cutters are designed for fishhooks and heavier gauge wire. These cutters are also replaceable and can be removed for sharpening.
The large bit driver holds Leatherman flat bits, making it easy to customize your tool for specific activities. Pair it with the Bit Kit for maximum versatility—for example, store an Allen key for quick mountain bike adjustments on the trail.
A reliable can opener is built into the tool. For best results, hook onto the lid with the designated point and rotate clockwise to avoid sharp edges.
The Signal’s awl is ideal for emergency repairs on heavy-duty canvas tents, piercing leather, or reaming holes in wood.
These unique survival tools set the Signal apart from other multi-tools.
To access them, slide the gate over, and the fire starter will pop out. The emergency whistle is located at one end—perfect for signaling others in case of an emergency or simply calling your pet back to camp.
The ferro rod is made of a softer material to make fire-starting easier in various conditions. To use it, remove it from the handle and strike it with the back of the saw at a 45-degree angle.
Hopefully, this guide has given you a complete understanding of the Signal multi-tool. Let us know in the comments how you use your Signal in the outdoors or try one out for yourself.
